Maintenance basics

What does a routine car service usually cover?

Routine service is not one universal checklist. Your owner’s manual, vehicle age, mileage, use and workshop inspection should shape what happens next.

Clear information, not a hard sell. Vehicle needs vary by model, age, use and local conditions.

A routine service is a starting point, not a promise of every repair.

The phrase “car service” can mean different things across vehicle models and workshops. A useful starting point is your owner’s manual: it sets out the maker’s recommended intervals and model-specific requirements.

At a workshop, a routine visit may include a conversation about the vehicle’s history followed by checks of items such as engine oil, filters, fluids, brakes, tyres, lights and visible leaks. The exact inspection depends on the vehicle and the service plan.

Ask for the inspection before agreeing to extra work. A recommendation should explain what was observed, why it matters, and whether it is urgent, planned maintenance or optional care.

Useful questions to take with you

  • Which items are due according to my vehicle’s manual or service history?
  • What did you observe during the inspection, and can you show me where?
  • What needs attention now, and what can be planned for a later visit?
  • Which parts, fluids or specifications are being proposed for this model?

Keep the record, not just the receipt

Note the date, odometer reading, work completed and any advice for the next check. A clear history helps you compare future observations and gives another workshop useful context if you change providers.

A useful standard

Good vehicle advice leaves room for your judgement.

01

Explain the why

Know what a part does and what a symptom can mean before deciding what to do next.

02

Separate urgent from useful

Not every recommendation has the same timing. Ask what needs attention now and what can wait.

03

Check the source

Use your owner’s manual and a qualified professional when the right answer depends on your model.
